All Children's Healthy Start Team Observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Healthy Start Breast Cancer Awareness BreakfastOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to put a plan in place for early detection and encourage others to do the same.

Five years ago, the St. Petersburg Healthy Start Federal (HSF) Project began hosting an annual awareness event at All Children's Hospital. The goal of the event is to reach the underserved population who may not know breast cancer facts and resources.

All Children's HSF Community Services team coordinated the Breast Cancer Awareness Breakfast was held on Oct. 20th. The two-hour event provided an opportunity for breast cancer survivors, those who have lost a loved one to the disease and community members to get updated on the latest breast cancer facts, pay tribute to themselves or a loved one, and participate in the "Survivor Soul" train line. Children attending the event enjoyed face painting, coloring activities and a movie.

The St. Petersburg Healthy Start Federal Project is part of a Federal Healthy Start Initiative funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration. All Children's partners with the Pinellas County Health Department, providing community outreach to reduce the differences that exist in the health of black women, children and families.
