|Research Symposium Spotlights Ongoing Research & Plans for Cohort Study|
The 1st annual All Children's Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine Research Symposium brought more than 80 attendees to the Outpatient Care Center on October 12 to hear presentations by ACH and ACH-affiliated researchers and view the 20 research posters on display (view program). Both early stage and senior investigators highlighted their work in a variety of research areas, including case reports and case series, basic science studies and clinical trials.
Neil Goldenberg, M.D., Ph.D., our new Director of Research, presented Pediatric Grand Rounds to more than 120 attendees as part of the daylong Symposium. In his presentation titled "Design, Implementation and Quality Assurance of the Institutional Prospective Inception Cohort Study in Child Health Research", he discussed the importance and application of an institutional-wide cohort study as a proactive and global research methodology. Dr. Goldenberg also highlighted plans for implementation of this type of pediatric cohort study at All Children's.
The award for Best Abstract was presented to pediatric cardiologist Michelle Miller, M.D., for her abstract titled "Prenatal Diagnosis of Coarctation of the Aorta Using a Newly Developed Calculation: The Modified Carotid-Subclavian Index." Dr. Miller is a member of the All Children's Specialty Physicians pediatric cardiology program. Her practice includes both pediatric and fetal cardiology; she sees patients at All Children's Outpatient Care, Sarasota as well as in the nursery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Dr. Miller is also a member of the inaugural class of the ACH JHM Designing Clinical Research Program. The group began working with research mentors and biostatisticians in summer 2011.
Last week's symposium also served as the kickoff event for the weekend retreat of the second cohort of the "Designing Clinical Research Program."
