Jonathan M. Ellen, M.D., Vice Dean for All Children’s Hospital and All Children’s Hospital Physician in Chief

Jonathan M. Ellen, M.D.In April 2011, Dr. Ellen was appointed Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine vice dean for All Children’s Hospital and All Children’s Hospital physician in chief. He is leading the development of mission-centric research and education initiatives at All Children’s, including a new pediatric residency program and translational research programs that will strengthen the integration of research and education with outstanding clinical care at the 259-bed St. Petersburg hospital.

Dr. Ellen joined the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine faculty in 1999 and in 2006 was named vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics and director of the Center for Child and Community Health Research.  In the same year, he also became director of the Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he already had established a growing research program to complement the academic and clinical missions of that campus. He is a professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a professor in the Department of Epidemiology and the Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Ellen’s research focuses on the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in adolescents, including HIV, and the factors associated with the acquisition, screening, treatment and care of these infections. He has served as a consultant to the Baltimore City Health Department, the San Francisco Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Academy of Sciences and the White House Office of National AIDS Policy. At the international level, he has advised the Jamaican Ministry of Health as well as STI investigators in England, the Caribbean and South Africa. He is a recipient of many research awards, including funding from the CDC, the National Institutes of Health and other agencies.

Raised in Philadelphia, Dr. Ellen graduated from Temple University Medical School and completed his residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He completed a fellowship in adolescent medicine at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) in addition to fellowships in sexually transmitted diseases at UCSF, the San Francisco Department of Health and the CDC. He has received numerous grant awards from the NIH and CDC and has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed scientific articles and 30 reviews, editorials and book chapters.
