BAM! Emeril Lagasse Visits All Children’s Hospital to Help Tackle Childhood Obesity

Take more than a dozen active kids. Place them in a garden with potted plants, shovels and a famously energized chef and what do you get?

When the chef is nationally known Emeril Lagasse, you quickly get more plants to tend and some enthusiastic talk about the importance of healthy ingredients - from "Farm to Fork," as the title of his latest book preaches. It's only fitting that Emeril dug in with local kids while visiting Zoe's Edible Garden at All Children's Hospital on Monday May, 16.  The common cause of improving children's health through healthy eating also led Emeril to announce a special benefit appearance this fall for All Children's Hospital. On November 4, 2011, Emeril will visit The Club at Treasure Island for a special, intimate evening of stories, amazing cuisine and his one-of-a-kind mastery of the culinary arts, benefiting All Children's Hospital.

Like Lagasse, All Children's Hospital is drawing attention to the benefits of kids' healthy eating - through programs like its Fit4Allkids Family Weight Management and Fitness program, and through interactive education in the recently dedicated Zoe's Edible Garden just outside the hospital's cafeteria. A gift from local Chef Tyson Grant and his wife Sommer, Zoe's Garden memorializes their daughter while providing a lesson on where healthy foods come from for hospitalized children and outpatients alike.

Perhaps the most famous chef in all of America, Emeril Lagasse is a graduate of prestigious Johnson & Wales University. Lagasse launched his career as the Executive Chef of New Orleans' landmark Commander's Palace. Currently the owner and operator of self-titled restaurants in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada and Pennsylvania, Chef Emeril has also written 15 bestselling cookbooks and starred on TV shows across the dial.

In 2002, he also established the Emeril Lagasse Foundation to support non-profit organizations that provide educational programs, life skills development, culinary training and cultural enrichment, creating opportunities in the communities where Emeril's restaurants operate. Improving children's access to and knowledge of healthy foods is among his Foundation's goals.

In recognition of this valuable work and the planned November benefit for All Children's Hospital, William "Bill" Edwards, president and owner of The Club at Treasure Island, arranged for the Cities of St. Petersburg and Treasure Island to declare Friday, November 4, 2011 to be "Emeril Lagasse Day."  St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster and Treasure Island Mayor Bob Minning presented Chef Lagasse with the official Key to the Cities.
