Karen Baybut, RN is the July 2014 DAISY Award recipient. She has been an ACH employee for more than 23 years and has worked in Case Management for 21 years. Currently Karen is an Emergency Center Case Manager. Previously she held a dual assignment as NICU Case Manager and Asthma Disease Manager. The DAISY Award is presented monthly to an All Children's Hospital Nurse that has provided extraordinary service to our patients.
Karen was nominated by a staff member who wrote:
I had a patient that could not be discharged until a new medication had been delivered to her home. The patient's father had been home all day waiting for it. That afternoon the patient's mother began calling the delivery company to ask what time the medication would be delivered. She was reassured that the medication was en route and would be delivered soon. She made several more calls to the company throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Finally, at 11: 00 p.m. on Friday night, the mother was told that all of the delivery drivers had gone home and that all undelivered packages were stored in a warehouse for delivery on Monday.
On Saturday morning I called Karen and explained what had happened and that the medication was very expensive, had to be kept cold and was in a warehouse until Monday. By then, the medication would have spoiled and would need to be reordered. Since the patient could not be discharged until we had confirmed that the medication had been delivered, the patient would have had to remain in hospital for an additional 3-4 days.
Karen spent two hours calling the delivery company trying to locate the medication, which ended up still being on the truck, not in a warehouse. She then somehow managed to get a supervisor of the delivery company to deliver the medication to the hospital on his way home after his shift. We were able to inspect the medication and found it was still cool and had not spoiled. We were able to discharge the patient that day, instead of on the following Monday or Tuesday. Thanks to Karen's dedication and hard work this patient did not have to spend several extra days in the hospital and the needed medication was saved.
Karen has been an excellent addition to our Emergency Center team. She is always ready to help and does an amazing job problem-solving. Many times she has the answer before I even ask the question. She is often monitoring everything that is going on in the EC team center, looking for ways to help. Not only do I get to work with Karen in the EC but also in my role as Medical Director of Care Coordination. It is an absolute pleasure having Karen as part of my team.
