All Children's Hospital Celebrates Third Anniversary as Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine with Launch of New Pediatric Residency Program

St. Petersburg, Fla. - March 21, 2014 - All Children's Hospital will celebrate its third year as a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine by announcing the inaugural class of the new All Children's Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine pediatric residency program. As All Children's Hospital expands its learners' environment, it will soon welcome 12 medical school graduates to its new residency program, along with 15 graduates entering the USF pediatric residency program that is affiliated with All Children's Hospital.

"This Match Day is the beginning of a new era and marks the first significant academic milestone for All Children's Hospital since integrating with Johns Hopkins Medicine," said Dr. Jonathan Ellen, president and physician in chief at All Children's Hospital and professor of pediatrics and vice dean, All Children's Hospital for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "As home to two unique residency programs, All Children's Hospital will further its commitment to patient safety and quality by training top health care leaders, clinicians and researchers of the future.

"Many medical residents end up practicing where they train," he notes, "so this opportunity also helps All Children's continue to build the local workforce and provide high-paying careers in the Tampa Bay area as we expand both our education and research missions."

During a Match Day celebration, All Children's Hospital employees will celebrate the announcement of the new residents, at the same time that thousands of medical students across the country attend ceremonies at their medical school and open envelopes to learn where they will spend the next several years training as residents.

"Match Day is always an exciting time for our pediatrics program," added Dr. Patricia Emmanuel, chair of pediatrics at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. "We look forward to having a new group of students from across the country, and we're delighted that they will be learning and caring for children at All Children's Hospital. Our strong partnership with All Children's creates a great learning environment for our residents in a variety of programs to learn more about caring for children across a broad range of specialties."

Pediatric residents in both programs will begin work on July 1, 2014, following graduation from medical school.

"Our new and unique training program offers an innovative approach. It was created from the ground up and designed to train outstanding pediatricians and create leaders in pediatric health care focused on patient safety and value," said Dr. Chad Brands, Director of Medical Education at All Children's Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine. "Nothing like this has been done in academic medicine in the past 50 years, and the physicians who will soon be coming to St. Petersburg to pursue pediatric training represent some of the best medical schools across the country."
