Sluggish, choppy presentation

Sometimes the Windows Media Player will seem to "hang" when loading a program, or playback will be very choppy.  

Note:  When viewing a Webcast presentation on a Mac system running 10.4.x, there may be a long delay before playback begins. In some cases, this delay can be a minute or more.  This problem only seems to affect Mac OS 10.4.x. Earlier versions do not seem to have any delay issues when starting playback

To resolve:

1. Close any open Windows Media Players and web browsers. 
2. Open Windows Media Player by selecting Go > Applications > Windows Media Player.
3. From the toolbar select Windows Media Player > Preferences > Network Settings tab.
4. Under Network Settings do the following:
• Uncheck the box next to "Multicast", "UDP", and "TCP"
• Select the box next to "HTTP"
5. Click on the Connections tab and choose the internet speed that most closely matches how you connect to the Internet.
6. Click on the Security tab and do the following:
• Select the box next to the item "Run script commands when present."
• Make sure the box next to the item "Do not run script commands and rich media streams if the player is running inside a web-page" is unselected.
7. Click OK and exit Windows Media Player.

Flip4Mac plug-in issues

Microsoft dropped support for Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X in January, 2006.  Instead, they distribute a third-party QuickTime plug-in called "Flip4Mac." This plug-in is not compatible with many Windows Media presentations.  Because of this incompatibility, Microsoft continues to distribute the final version of Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X at this URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/mac/mp9/default.aspx

We recommend that you do not install the Flip4Mac QuickTime plug-in.  If it is installed already, the following steps will help you to disable the plug-in:

1. Close any open Quick Time players and web browsers. 
2. Click your desktop, and select Apple > System Preferences to open the Mac System Preferences.
3. Click Flip4Mac WMV under Other.
4. On the Plug-in tab, uncheck the "Use Flip4Mac WMV Internet Plug-in" checkbox.
5. Exit the dialog to save your changes.

Viewing on Intel-based Macs

Windows Media Player 9 for Mac is not a Universal application and must be run under Rosetta emulation on an Intel-based Mac. As such, the browser must also be forced to run under Rosetta as well. This is a temporary workaround until a practical solution is available.  The following are steps for configuring the browser to run under Rosetta emulation: 

1. Close all open browser windows.
2. Select Go > Applications to open the Applications directory.
3. Right click or ctrl-click your browser (e.g. Safari or Firefox)-and click Get Info.
4. In the General section, check the box next to "Open using Rosetta."
5. Close the Get Info box.

The next time the web browser is launched it will run under Rosetta emulation and presentations should play back. You may experience some sluggishness from the response of your browser.
