Congratulations to Elissa Alba, RN who is the October 2012 Daisy Award recipient. Lisa is an RN in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The DAISY Award is presented monthly to an All Children's Hospital Nurse who has provided extraordinary service to our patients. 

Lisa was nominated by a parent who wrote:

My labor and delivery were complicated. My son was born at 29 weeks and after a week in another hospital he became very ill and was transported to All Children's Hospital. This was one of the scariest times of my life. I decided to start looking for a "primary care nurse." Luckily, one night, Lisa Alba was taking care of him. The second she walked in the room I felt better. She carried herself with such confidence and was extremely comforting. I immediately felt that my baby was safe with her. I asked her to be his primary nurse. As I got to know her, I realized how lucky I was to have her as my baby's nurse.

She was his best advocate. If she felt like something needed to be addressed, she would be the first one to make a phone call, find another nurse, or ask a doctor until she was satisfied. She was so patient with him. He was a high maintenance baby. Lisa would rock him to sleep, play with him on his mat and soothe him when he cried. She made signs and put them in his room to explain how he liked to sleep, and that his singing monkey was a favorite toy. She did an excellent job of explaining all sorts of terms that I did not understand. She would go out of her way to find me information about what was happening with the baby. She went above and beyond to teach me how to take care of him physically and how to be a good mother emotionally.

She had such a nurturing touch. She was an excellent example of a patient, kind, and loving person. She was so attentive to my needs as a new mother who was out of her element and extremely uncomfortable in her surroundings. She made me feel like the mom. When I felt that I didn't know what I was doing, she was the first person to encourage me and say, "You are his mother. You will always know what to do for him." She did not treat her work at the hospital as a job, it was clearly her passion. She made the past five months at All Children's a blessing. I believe that she went above and beyond the call of duty for me and my family.

"Lisa has been a nurse since 1991. She has worked in the NICU at All Children's for the past six years, retuning to ACH after working here previously," said Cindy Driscoll RN, BSN, MS, Director of the NICU. "She is an extremely strong patient advocate. She works with the healthcare team to ensure that her patients have what they need to achieve the optimal outcome.  Lisa frequently 'primaries' babies in the NICU and goes out of her way to make sure the practitioners and neonatologists know her concerns and they can come together to develop a plan of care.  She demonstrates  service excellence on a consistent and ongoing basis."
