| Sylvia Powell Joins Office of Vice Dean of Education Jonathan Ellen, M.D. |
Sylvia Powell, M.B.A., has joined All Children's Hospital as Assistant Dean of Administration in the Office of the Vice From 2008-2011, Sylvia was Director of Administration for the Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, part of the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. In this role she was responsible for all research, philanthropic, professional practice and service line operations of the Children's Center, overseeing a $119 million budget. "Working at the Children's Center was a wonderful experience," says Sylvia. "I had never before seen such total involvement of faculty, staff and families working toward one goal-helping children with cancer." However, strong family ties in Florida led Sylvia to seek new opportunities in her home state. She is pleased to be back in Florida and to take part in expanding the scope of academic medicine at All Children's. "From the moment I toured the new hospital I could see that All Children's is a very impressive facility where the needs of the patient are paramount. I'm excited to have the chance to share in the hospital's history. We have an opportunity to create a pediatric residency program that will incorporate innovative approaches to pediatric care, and to help All Children's gain in both national and international prominence." Sylvia will work closely with Jonathan Ellen, M.D., in the recruitment of faculty who will be based at All Children's. A director of graduate medical education has been appointed and will play a key role in this effort. This team has submitted a proposal for the new residency program to the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education and is in the process of preparing for a potential site visit early next year. The goal is for the first class of residents to enter the new program in July 2013. |
