| All Children's Supports the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes |
The morning was filled with fun activities for kids, entertainment provided by Radio Disney, delicious food, vendors offering helpful information, and plenty of camaraderie among the many participants. More than 1,200 walkers took part in the event on a cool, cloudless morning beside the beach - including a handful with an All Children's connection. One such group was "TEAM DSCHEIB," including 11-year-old Davey Scheiber, a Type 1 diabetes patient of ACH's Dr. Pallavi Iyer and son of All Children's Strategic Communications Editor Dave Scheiber. Davey's team also included: his mother, Janie, and four of his five sisters, Laura, Mollie, Julia and Emma; one of his Lakeview Fundamental elementary school teachers, Elizabeth Joyce, who helped organize a school-wide sale of Davey's custom T-shirt design to raise money for JDRF of Tampa Bay; and several classmates and family friends. All Children's is teaming up with the Tampa Bay JDRF to host the 2013 Diabetes Family Day on Saturday, April 20 from 8:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m., featuring information on health, fitness and nutrition, activities for kids, new product updates and special guest speaker Sam Fuld of the Tampa Bay Rays. JDRF Walks are held in more than 200 cities worldwide. Nearly 900,000 people nationally walked last year and raised $86 million for research toward curing, treating, and preventing T1D and its complications. Officials are the JDRF Walk at Fort DeSoto estimate that the event raised some $185,000. |
