I Can't Afford Treatment for Genital Warts. What Should I Do?

I'm 99% positive that I have genital warts on and around my penis. I waited to see if they would go away, and they haven't. Here's my problem: I do not have health coverage nor a doctor. I really want to get them treated, but I can't find costs or anything to determine if I can even afford it, which I don't think I'm going to be able to. What should I do?

Your first step is to see a doctor to find out for sure if you have HPV, the sexually transmitted disease (STD) that can cause genital warts. Some cities and counties offer free clinics that provide STD testing and treatment. Just do a web search for "free STD clinics" and the name of your town or area.

Once you know for sure that you have an STD, the clinic staff will be able to advise you on treatment. Depending on the clinic, treatment may be free or discounted. Some clinics offer payment plans so you can pay over time. You also can visit the Health Insurance Marketplace to apply for government health care coverage.

Congratulations on taking responsibility for getting tested and treated. STDs are not something anyone should ignore. In the future, you'll want to use a condom every time you have sex. Although condoms might not offer complete protection from HPV (the virus can spread from genital areas not covered by a condom), they do offer some protection and reduce the risk of contracting other STDs.
