A parent wrote:
My son is a patient in the NICU. He has Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and has been in the hospital for over a month. I have visited numerous times, but due to extenuating circumstances, I cannot be there all the time. Talking with Betsy for just a few minutes, I found out more about my son's condition and how to comfort him then I had learned in over a month. She has never been judgmental. She explained different ways of comforting him and even offered to take his dirty laundry home to wash it because I live so far away. She always stops what she is doing to give me any detailed information I request and has helped voice my concerns to the nurse practitioner and doctor on staff. She gave me information about all the medications my son is taking.
Since I also have a five-year-old, Betsy went over the new regulations regarding childcare. She is always friendly and upbeat. She has a very calm, patient, and nurturing demeanor and she makes me feel confident about having my newborn in the unit. It is difficult beyond words to have to leave my son in a hospital while I return home, but when Betsy is working I can rest easy knowing his needs are well cared for and that he is truly loved by her. When it was time for his first bath, I was a little nervous and Betsy helped to calm me. She was understanding and kind. I believe that Betsy deserves to be recognized for her compassion and dedication toward the newborns and infants in the NICU. I have never encountered a more sensitive and nurturing nurse in a medical setting anywhere.
"Betsy has been a RN in the NICU for over 27 years. She has a very calm and caring approach which is especially helpful when dealing with families," said Cindy Driscoll RN, BSN, MS, Director of the NICU. "She has led many different initiatives during her time in the NICU and is currently involved in working with the neonatal abstinence infants and their families. She works in conjunction with Operation PAR and Bayfront Medical Center to ensure that mothers are given consistent information and an orientation to the unit prior to their baby being born. This is just one example of how she goes above and beyond for the infants and the families in the NICU."
Thank you Betsy, for your service excellence to All Children's Hospital and your continued passion to pursue perfection.
