Alicia Thornton and Nicole Stewart are the August 2013 DAISY Award Recipients

August 2013 Daisy AwardNursing at All Children's Hospital is a team effort. It's not unusual for staff members to praise the efforts of colleagues that help when nominating a nurse for the Daisy Award. This month, the Daisy Award recognizes the team work of two nurses on 7 North. Congratulations to Alicia Thornton, BSN, RN, CPN and Nicole Stewart, BSN, RN, CPN, who are the August 2013 Daisy Award recipients. The DAISY Award is presented monthly to an All Children's Hospital nurse who has provided extraordinary service to our patients.

A fellow employee recently wrote:

I would like to nominate two of my fellow co-workers for the Daisy Award, Nicole Stewart and Alicia Thornton. I am very thankful and appreciative to work with these two great nurses who have gone above and beyond to reach out and help their co-workers. They exemplify a "team player" attitude. On a rather busy workday, I was juggling multiple tasks. Nicole and Alicia did not hesitate to step in and help me. Both of them assisted me with various patient care needs. Nicole even insisted I hand over my work phone for a brief period so I could meet up with my manager for a brief meeting (another task which I was attempting to complete during my workday). I knew my patients were in good hands as these nurses, who both had their own patient assignments, took the lead to lend a helping hand to me. I could not have accomplished the work load of that shift without their help. I am thankful for the teamwork on 7 North and know that we have such reliable and exceptional nurses who selflessly help one another! That's what makes 7 North a "family" unit. Thank you Nicole and Alicia!

Alicia Thornton BSN, RN, CPN has been a nurse on the Surgical Neuroscience Unit (7 North) since March 2010. Alicia exemplifies service standards in her daily practice.  "She does a phenomenal job establishing a good rapport with patients and families and is a great advocate," said Pam Gehrich, BSN, RN, CPN, Clinical Manager of the Surgical Neuroscience Unit.  "Alicia has been nominated for the Daisy Award in the past, receiving kind words from patients and families."

"Alicia is kind and compassionate while providing a calming demeanor in her professional role," said Melissa Macogay, BSN, RN, CCRN, Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care and Surgical Neuroscience Units. "She consistently has a positive "can-do" attitude and a wonderful smile. Our team is so lucky to have her as part of our team."

Nicole Stewart, BSN, RN, CPN has been a team member on the Surgical Neuroscience Unit (7 North) since July 2006. She started her career here at All Children's Hospital as a HUC while pursuing her nursing career.  After graduation, Nicole participated in the ACH Nurse Residency Program. "Nicole is always very friendly with patients, families, and staff members.  She listens well and displays a positive attitude even on the most difficult days," said Pam Gehrich, BSN, RN, Clinical Manager of the Surgical Neuroscience Unit. "She is extremely helpful and is seen as a great resource for the unit." She has also been nominated for the Daisy Award in the past.

"Nicole is an excellent patient advocate. She demonstrates service excellence and practices our service standards on a consistent basis. We are proud of her extraordinary nursing service," said Melissa Macogay, BSN, RN, CCRN, Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care and Surgical Neuroscience Units.  Nicole is definitely an asset to the ACH family."

Thank you both for your service excellence to All Children's Hospital and your continued passion to pursue perfection. Congratulations of being team recipients of the DAISY Award for August.
