Ruben Polo is the February 2011 Employee of the Month. Ruben works in Environmental Services as a Housekeeper I and recently started with All Children's in 2010. A fellow employee recognized Ruben's Service Excellence saying:
I had been out sick for almost a week with a really bad cold. I came back to work and I was not really myself. I had gone to breakfast in the cafe and because I did not have any pockets, I decided to put my debit card in the bag with my food. When I got back to my desk I finished my breakfast and threw all of my things away.
Later that day, as lunchtime rolled around, I went to get my card to purchase my lunch. Upon not being able to find it, I remembered that I left it in my bag and had thrown it away. I looked in my trash bin and found that Ruben had already taken my trash out. I found him out on my unit and we both went to the dumpster down in the basement to see if we could find my trash. Ruben put his gloves on and without hesitation began sifting through three big bins of trash from all over the hospital looking for mine. He felt really bad he could not find my debit card, but I reminded him that it was my fault and that I should have been more aware of what I was doing. I thanked him and went back upstairs to my desk to call my bank to cancel my card.
As you could imagine, already feeling bad from being sick, now I was going to have to go without my debit card. Needless to say, I was pretty upset. As I returned to my desk my phone rang and I took a phone call from a nurse. As I was ending the call, Ruben again appeared in my office and proceeded to tell us a story. After I had left downstairs, Ruben, still determined to help me, went out back to the dock to see if the garbage was out there. He saw the garbage man pulling away with the garbage on his truck. Ruben yelled to the driver because he had left his door opened. This turned out to be a good thing for me. Ruben asked the driver if he could look at the garbage on his truck. The driver of course was puzzled as to why Ruben would want to do such a thing, but let him look anyway.
Ruben continued to tell his story and upon finishing he then reached into his pocket and my debit card was in his hand. I was so happy to see that he had it. It truly was a blessing to me not to have to wait 10 days to get a new card. I feel Ruben went way above and beyond to help me. In telling my story on my unit, I then began to hear others express what an awesome worker he is and how he is always there when needed. He is very friendly and always has a smile on his face when I see him. Ruben is very polite and courteous to others. He definitely exceeds in Service Excellence. All Children's should be very proud to have him as part of their team. Ruben could have been just like me and said "oh well" and gone about his day, but because of his dedication to his job and his co-workers he did not do that.
