|Dr. Perno Named Medical Director for Care Coordination|
Joseph Perno, M.D., M.B.A. has been named Medical Director of Care Coordination at All Children's Hospital. Vice President of Medical Affairs Brigitta U. Mueller, M.D., M.H.C.M., announced the appointment at the annual meeting of the ACH medical staff on November 12, 2013. Dr. Perno will also continue to serve as Assistant Medical Director of the ACH Pediatric Emergency Center.
"Dr. Perno will focus on aligning clinical resources across the continuum of care," said Dr. Mueller. "He will serve as a valued liaison between our R.N. case managers and members of the medical staff.
"Case management has grown well beyond its previous focus on discharge planning; today that role often begins when the patient first presents to our emergency department or when a physician reaches out to our Patient Transfer Center. The process continues throughout the hospital stay." Dr. Mueller explains that a goal for the future is to include coordination of care after discharge, with Dr. Perno helping to guide this process.
"He will provide a medical voice in many of these discussions, reaching out to campus- and community-based physicians as needed."
Dr. Perno initially will devote 25 percent of his time to this new role, a commitment that may grow as health care reform and the transition to population health make care coordination increasingly important.
"I am excited about this new direction and feel well prepared for the challenge," says Dr. Perno. "In some ways, the care coordination model represents a big change from how we've been practicing for a long time. It's important that we move forward in this direction as we focus on getting the appropriate patient into the appropriate bed.
"For those patients who really don't need an inpatient bed, we want to keep them out of the hospital as much as possible and get them the care they do need in the most appropriate setting. I look forward to working with physicians and with our affiliate hospitals on these challenges."
Dr. Perno joined All Children's in 2003 as an attending pediatric emergency medicine physician and in 2005 became Assistant Medical Director for the pediatric emergency department. In 2009 he was named Chairman, All Children's Medicine Quality of Care as well as Vice Chairman of the Department of Medicine. Dr. Perno has been a participant and/or chair for several system and quality improvement efforts at ACH and has authored numerous emergency center protocols and guidelines.
He helps to educate parents and the community on child health issues during "On Call with ACH" segments on Fox 13's Good Day Tampa Bay and is a volunteer pediatrician with the Clearwater Free Clinic, where he was honored as 2009 Physician of the Year.
