The 2013 International Walk to School Day was a big success. All Children's Hospital, in conjunction with the Florida Suncoast Safe Kids Coalition and Safe Routes to School, is making a difference to reduce the number of child pedestrian deaths and injuries in our community. International Walk to School Day was a fun and effective way to promote health and safety for kids walking to school.

Over 7,500 students, parents and teachers from more than 65 schools in seven counties participated in the walk on Wednesday, October 9. Congratulations to Braden River Elementary in Manatee County. They had 100% of their approximately 600 students walk, bike or ride scooters to school during the event.

"On International Walk to School Day, parents and caregivers teach and model safe pedestrian behavior," said District Chief Jim Millican, Lealman Fire District and Safe Kids Executive Chair. "Our children and youth learn by mimicking what they see.  By walking with them on International Walk to School Day, we can show children how to walk safely."
