|Shorecrest Students Help Grow Zoë’s Garden|
Last week, students from the 4th grade at Shorecrest Preparatory School visited All Children's Hospital to deliver more than 40 gallons of compost to help enhance Zoë's Edible Garden. It's the conclusion of a science project they started at the beginning of the school year.
The garden is a gift from Tyson and Sommer Grant. Tyson is Executive Chef and Partner in St. Petersburg's Parkshore Grill. Their daughter Zoë passed away at All Children's Hospital in 2009.
"Compost is a natural soil made of waste that you usually throw away (banana peels, coffee grounds, egg shells, etc). These are the types of things that create energy in soil and add life to a garden," said Tyson Grant. "The children wanted to donate their compost to Zoë's Garden. So today, they are planting six fruit trees using their compost to mix with the soil. The kids will always remember that it was their compost that helped make these trees grow."
"The children have spent the year learning about composting," explained Lisa Bianco, head of the lower schools for Shorecest. "They did the composting with the purpose of bringing it to Zoë's Garden as a community service and science project. Our teachers did a wonderful job guiding the students through this project during the school year.
"We want our students to be stewards of the environment. We also want them to be thinking about the community and how they can make a difference. They are learning how to contribute to nature and at the same time doing something positive by helping Zoë's Garden."
