St. Petersburg, Fla. - March 28, 2014 - All Children's Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine will host a series of programs focusing on empowering and educating women on today's top health care issues, including breast cancer, Alzheimer's disease and sleep disorders. A Woman's Journey will feature top experts speaking about the latest advances in women's health as well as disease prevention in these fields.

In addition to Paul Rothman, M.D., dean of the medical faculty and CEO of John Hopkins Medicine, this year's event features presentations from renowned speakers, including:

  • Lillie Shockney, R.N., administrative director of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center and the Johns Hopkins Cancer Survivorship Program and a cancer survivor herself, will weave her own personal story into her presentation on how the effects of cancer persist long after treatment and impact the lives of cancer survivors and their loved ones.
  • Psychiatrist Peter Rabins, M.D., co-author of The 36-Hour Day and author of The Why of Things, will discuss memory loss associated with aging and distinguish between dementias and Alzheimer's disease. Rabins will describe intervention strategies and the importance of mental, physical and social activity in maintaining cognitive abilities and memory.
  • Charlene Gamaldo, M.D., a neurologist and the medical director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Sleep Disorders Center, will discuss the role hormones can play in sleep and how that role changes as women age. Gamaldo will explain how sleep disorders are evaluated and treated and when they may signal a serious underlying condition.

"All Children's Hospital's main focus is ensuring the health and well-being of children and their families. Since mothers' health affects the entire family, we also need to emphasize the health of women," says Jonathan Ellen, M.D., president, physician-in-chief and vice dean at All Children's Hospital and professor of pediatrics in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "As a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, we at All Children's have the opportunity to bring leading experts in topics related to women's health to the Tampa Bay and Sarasota communities who can provide medical information that ultimately improves the health of children and families."
