The All Children's Hospital  Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Centers: Training in the New Medicine

Simulation Center

A growing movement in advancing medical education relates to concerns from patients that students, residents and other learners are "practicing" on them prior to becoming proficient in performing procedures. Medical simulation is a broad and innovative field that addresses these patient concerns while also filling the experiential gap that learners may have in their training. Simulation encompasses the use of standardized patients, virtual reality, computerized simulation and state-of-the art computerized mannequins to be able to replicate real-life scenarios and allow health care professionals to "practice on plastic" to hone their skills.

Use of simulation in medical education has been shown to not only improve outcomes for learners but to also have a significant impact on patient-safety - read more about recent research related to simulation.

At ACH-JHM, two centers provide the opportunity to experience the most recent advances in simulation.

OCC Simulation Center

Simulation Center

The OCC Simulation Center includes a simulated NICU room, a simulated hospital patient room that can be used for med/surg, EC and ICU scenarios, viewing bay with double sided mirror and an adjoining conference room for debriefing sessions. Five high-tech mannequins ranging in various "ages" from babies to young adults will be given commands to simulate a variety of medical situations. Staff participating in the training will respond to the various scenarios and provide the appropriate medical response. The mannequin will respond in real time based on the type of medical treatment they receive. If it's the right treatment, the mannequin will simulate an improvement; if not, the simulator will worsen the condition.

The Simulation Center is equipped with cameras that will film each exercise. This allows participants to critique their performance and learn ways to further perfect the care they expect to give to actual patients.

NICU Simulation Center and Newborn Practice Bay

This simulation center is structured to provide health professionals with access to real-life scenarios encountered in the delivery room and NICU. Students and residents wishing to hone their resuscitation skills, intubation skills or placement of arterial lines can spend time in these facilities and become proficient in any particular aspect of care related to the newborn and neonate.

With a well-defined simulation curriculum, learners can proceed through various clinical scenarios (meconium aspiration, surfactant delivery, cardiorespiratory distress) to simulate leading a resuscitation team in a real-life and real-time scenario.

Whether you are a student, resident, fellow, training nurse practitioner or a seasoned clinical provider needing more practice, these resources are a valuable tool in advancing your skills.
