Performs a variety of Support Staff functions in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
Must have a High School diploma or equivalent with a strong interest in basic sciences. Previous phlebotomy experience required, pediatric phlebotomy preferred. Must complete Competency Assessment sheet (Equipment/User Training Record and Competency Assessment) for Support Staff and Support Staff I Checklist and meet requirements and performance standards of the Support Staff I within three (3) months of employment or equivalent (500 hours) if not full-time employee. Requires effective communication skills and discreet handling of confidential information. Must demonstrate ability to make decisions with independent judgement, to organize work and to meet deadlines. Rigid accuracy in identification and reporting of numbers and names. During patient contact, must be able to communicate with, understand and react effectively to the age-specific needs unique to patients. Must be able to enter computer data in Laboratory Information System and be proficient in using automated instruments and mechanical apparatus. Must be able to move freely about hospital campus. Light to moderate lifting (up to 25 pounds) required. Requires above average manual dexterity and visual acuity. Must be willing to accept new responsibilities and challenges
