This is National Sleep Technologists Week. All Children's Hospital would like to thank our team of dedicated sleep technologists for the special care they extend to our patients and families undergoing testing in the sleep laboratory.
ACH Registered Sleep Technologists conduct over 600 patient studies each year. Sleep studies involve monitoring patients with more than 20 special sensors that record sleep state, breathing flow and effort, carbon dioxide levels, oxygen saturation, limb muscle activity, heart rhythm, snoring, and body position. The sleep study recording usually contains from 700 to 1,000 pages (epochs) of sleep data.
The technologist monitors each patient and identifies sleep stages, breathing events, arousals and limb movements. Sleep technologists also provide patient care and administer therapy for treatment of breathing disorders, including PAP (Positive Airway Pressure) and oxygen.
