All Children's Hospital was asked to care for several patients who are survivors of the recent earthquake in Haiti. Four of the Haitian children brought to the Tampa area last week by military transport were admitted to All Children's for treatment. The patients range in age from 18 months to 14 years. Three of the children were each accompanied by a relative, and an orphanage worker accompanied the fourth child.
"To receive the children and assess their needs, we were thankful for the efforts of a full team of staff from All Children's," said Pat Hughes, Interim Chief Nursing Officer. "We also had great support here at ACH from the inpatient units, from our Emergency Center physicians, our orthopaedic surgeons, the hospitalists, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, hematology, intensivists, and Dr. Greg Hahn, our Chief of Staff," added Hughes. Dr. Joe Perno from the ACH Emergency Center worked with Tampa General Hospital trauma surgeon Dr. Kathy Carruba at Tampa International Airport to triage patients and help coordinate transfer. The hospital quickly organized and staffed some available space to accommodate the arriving patients. Once stabilized, three of the children were admitted to critical care units.
