|Catherine Japhet is the August 2014 Employee of the Month|
Catherine Japhet is the August 2014 Employee of the Month. Catherine works as a chaplain in pastoral care and has been with All Children's Hospital since 2004. Catherine was recognized for her Service Excellence by a fellow employee who wrote:
While working with a family this past Saturday, the family told me they would not have made it through the day without Catherine's help. The family's baby was born early that morning and had died at All Children's in the afternoon. At the family's request, Catherine worked diligently to bring the mother over from Baby Place to hold her baby for the first and last time. The family praised Catherine for her support throughout the day as the baby's health declined. I also knew Catherine had been here all night offering support to another family who had lost a child. When I left for the end of my shift, Catherine was still here waiting for the arrival of a father of a child who was not expected to live through the night. I just want to recognize how often families call on our chaplains. It is often in times of sorrow or grief. Catherine was ready to offer support and comfort to these families without hesitation. Sadly, the third child did pass away, and thankfully Catherine was already offering comfort to the grandmother and was there for the parents as well upon their arrival.
Catherine's Department Director added:
This particular weekend, Catherine ended up being at the hospital for over 24 hours because there were three deaths, which is definitely not the norm. Catherine offered spiritual support to all three families during what was an unbelievably difficult, stressful and challenging time for parents, siblings, and extended family. In addition to the comfort she provided, she also helped the families with basic information about how to contact a funeral home and arrange for a funeral. Generally, young families have never been put in the position of making these kinds of arrangements. Catherine helps families understand the process for their child until the child leaves the hospital. Whenever possible, Catherine works with the other members of the psychosocial team to help support families during this difficult time. I am pleased that Catherine was nominated for her work with families.
Catherine, thank you so much for your wonderful Service Excellence and all you do even in the most difficult and trying times for the children and families we are privileged to serve. Congratulations for being selected the All Children's Hospital Employee of the Month!
