All Children's Goes RED to Support Heart Health

The lobby of the Outpatient Care Center was filled with All Children's Hospital employees and a splash of red Friday during lunch hour - all in the name of heart health.

ACH's "Go Red" Day open house - tied to the American Heart Association's annual celebration to raise awareness of adult heart disease - attracted a steady flow of staffers from noon-to-1:30 p.m. They were treated to an array of healthy food snacks (from veggie trays to apples to trail mix and fruit pops), and tables packed helpful information on how to keep your heart in good condition.

Humana representatives were on hand to answer questions and distribute fliers on easy ways to stay fit and eat healthier. Visitors could have their blood pressure checked, participate in yoga classes or take part in a Mindful Practice meditation class. Information on how to sign up for those weekly classes at All Children's, as well as Zumba, was also on display.

And, of course, anyone who wore red to the event, organized by the ACH marketing department, received a gift: a squeezable red foam heart designed to relieve stress.

"I think it's great that the hospital does this for the staff," said Sherry Belcher, R.N.,  waiting in a long line of arriving employees. "We spend a lot of time caring for other people so it's important to know that we have to take care of ourselves as well. Because if we can't take care of ourselves, how are we going to take care of anybody else?"

Susan Collins, Executive Director of the Johns Hopkins All Children's Heart Institute, smiled as she looked around the packed lobby. The latest collaboration with the American Heart Association, which provides support for research and funding, couldn't have been going any better.

"It's fantastic, such a great turnout," she said. "It's so important to spotlight heart disease in adults."

And this time, spotlight shined brightly on the cause with a touch of red.
