Surgical Oncology

All Children's pediatric surgeons offer state-of-the art surgical treatment to pediatric cancer patients.  They work in partnership with ACH hematology/oncology and ACH bone marrow transplant services in the largest pediatric cancer program in the southeastern US, and are active participants in the national Children’s Oncology Group.

Pediatric cancer patients at ACH benefit from true multidisciplinary care, facilitated by a bi-weekly Tumor Board meeting, in which specialists from hematology/oncology, pediatric surgery, radiology, and pathology discuss therapeutic plans. Radiation medicine specialists from our affiliate H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center also attend these meetings.

Most pediatric cancer patients will require specialized central venous access procedures to facilitate chemotherapy and blood sampling, and ACH pediatric surgeons do these every day.  Central venous access procedures also facilitate bone marrow or stem cell transplantation, which may be required as part of cancer therapy.

Surgical involvement in pediatric cancer therapy, beyond central venous access,  includes biopsy of solid tumors and surgical removal of solid tumors.  Pediatric tumors we treat include lymphoma, neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, hepatoblastoma, and connective tissue sarcomas like rhabdomyosarcoma, as well as thyroid carcinoma.
