Session 1: Integrating Charitable and Estate Planning
Turney P. Berry, J.D.
Mr. Berry discussed new and interesting planning ideas that benefit both charitable and non-charitable beneficiaries, including CLATS, remainder interest transfers, and gifts of business interests. Thinking about how to create a comprehensive plan that matches goals, strategies, and the appropriate charitable entity was the goal of this session.

Stephanie Loomis-Price, J.D.
This session provided practical tips with some discussion on recent developments in audits and case law related to family limited partnerships. Topics addressed included: Determining when it is not feasible to create a partnership, Optimizing partnership formation to avoid IRS attacks, Advising clients on proper entity operation, Defending transfers of interests in closely held entities in audits and Protecting and asserting privileges throughout the process.
- Session 4: Practical and Effective Uses of Grantor Trusts, Installment Sales, Private Annuities, and Sometimes Expected Consequences
Jerome M. Hesch, M.B.A., J.D.
The presentation provided examples of the application of effective uses for irrevocable grantor trusts, including interest rate planning, GST planning, discount strategies, planning for grantors who may want the trust to pay some taxes in the future, innovative techniques to enhance the effectiveness of installment and annuity sales, planning for future unwinding of unsuccessful freezes and tax and practical traps for the unwary.

Session 5: Trusts and Strategies for Public Benefits Special Needs Planning 2010
Charles S. Robinson
This presentation discussed planning opportunities when your client is faced with catastrophic care costs as a result of chronic illness such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, stroke or has a disability. We discussed strategies and suggested documents to reduce stress and protect some or all of the family's life savings. The lecture included strategies to qualify for VA and Medicaid benefits and the special challenges involved in planning for a blended family with an ill or disabled spouse. The speaker covered first party and third party Special Needs Trusts including trusts for the ill or disabled spouse.

Session 7: Continuation of Recent Wealth Transfer Developments
Professor Jeffrey N. Pennell, J.D.
Professor Pennell explored current cases, legislation, regulations, and rulings of significance to estate planners with an eye to their practical significance to everyday planning and drafting. Audience participation was encouraged and the session sought to extrapolate from the law as it is developing to situations that have not yet tested the boundaries of the law.
