Treating Childhood Obesity The Big Epidemic |
Obesity is perhaps the most important pediatric health problem in the United States - 15 to 30 percent of children and adolescents are considered overweight, with Body Mass Indexes (BMIs) above the 85th percentile.
Obesity often negatively impacts a child's physical and mental health. Overweight and obese children are at increased risk for high cholesterol, hypertension, Type II diabetes, sleep apnea and orthopedic disorders. Impaired glucose tolerance and asthma also are associated with childhood obesity.
The physical effects often are accompanied by a loss of self-esteem. Children who are overweight or obese are bullied more often than peers of average weight. Overall, this generation of children could be the first to have shorter, less healthy lives than their parents.
Enhance patient care and improve knowledge in managing childhood obesity
