Hospital Visitor Information

All Children’s Hospital Acute Care Rehabilitation Services provides high quality therapy services in the inpatient setting.  A physician referral is needed to provide our services. The therapists in the hospital are often the initial point of rehabilitation contact for our pediatric patients and their families. The clinicians at All Children's Hospital Acute Care Rehabilitation provide an interdisciplinary approach to care for the purpose of promoting independence, maximizing function and initiating the rehab continuum of care. We provide services to newborns, infants, children, adolescents and their families during their hospital admission. We help facilitate the transition for discharge home and referrals to other All Children's rehabilitation centers closer to home.

Who benefits?

Pediatric patients with one or several of the following disorders or diagnoses would benefit from certain rehabilitative therapies while in the hospital:

• Patients with neurological changes, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain tumors and seizure disorders
• Patient with an artificial airway and/or ventilator.
• Patients who have long standing inmobility due to medical complications (muscle wasting, decreased endurance).
• Patients who are having trouble communicating and/or feeding problems.
• Patients suffering from multiple trauma- orthopaedic and neurological issues.
• Patients  with range of motion/positioning/splinting concerns.
• Patients born premature or with significant developmental delays.
• Patients who have difficulty managing their pain due to surgery, trauma, wounds, headaches and/or other diagnoses.

What types of services are available?

Audiology

• Identify possible hearing deficits
• Newborn hearing screenings
• Behavioral hearing assessments in soundbooth
• Auditory Brainsterm Response (ABRs)
• Provide follow-up if hearing devices are necessary

Occupational Therapy

• Increases ability to perform activities of daily living (self feeding, hygiene, dressing)
• Increases strength/function for appropriate play and use of upper extremities.
• Increases endurance/strength for functional task
• Fine motor skills/development
• Visual motor/visual perceptual skills
• Upper extremity splinting
• Improves state regulation and calming of our premature infants
• Non-pharmacological pain interventions and relaxation techniques

Physical Therapy

• Bed mobility- positioning, rolling, moving into sitting
• Transfers
• Ambulation (crutch/gait training or other assistive devices)
• Balance and coordination
• Lower extremity strengthening
• Gross motor skills/development
• Range of motion for all extremities
• Wound care/whirlpool
• Lower extremity splinting
• Non-pharmacological pain interventions and relaxation techniques
• Endurance
• Improves state regulation and calming of our premature infants including parent education on infant positioning and handling

Speech Therapy

• Feeding and Swallowing
• Swallow studies (Oral Pharyngeal Motility Study-OPMS)
• Functional communication
• Cognitive communication
• Language evaluations and treatment
• Speaking valves for patients with a tracheostomy
