Pre Award Activities
The Department of Research and Grants Administration is available to assist investigators in the development and submission of extramural funding requests for new research and program proposals. The Department is committed to submitting project proposals of superior quality to federal, state, private, public agencies and foundations. All Children’s offers a variety of services to assist our staff, University Faculty and affiliated personnel in applying for funding, including:
There are many ways that we work to increase the linkages between staff/faculty research interests and funding sources. We review and analyze funding guidelines and program announcements from government agencies, research institutes and private foundations for appropriateness and compatibility with our mission. All Children’s is a participant in the National Association of Children’s Hospital’s and Related Institutions Grant Project. This project provides regular announcements of compatible grant opportunities and has an interactive webpage focused on identifying funding opportunities. Health System and affiliated staff who want to gain access to the webpage for the NACHRI Grant Project may contact Jan Wencel, the Proposal Development Coordinator, at 727-767-4065. The hospital also subscribes to the Foundation Directory Online, a comprehensive searchable database of U.S. funders and their grants maintained by the Foundation Center. This database can be accessed in the All Children’s library. Funding announcements from the NACHRI Grants Project, the Foundation Center and other sources are available through the Internet and via email distribution. To sign up for the email distribution list, please contact Jan Wencel. Additionally, time permitting, the Proposal Development Coordinator will assist staff members with targeted searches for specific project interests. The Proposal Development Coordinator also maintains a list of funders who support children’s health research and programs.
The following are a list of publically-accessible searchable funding databases:
- NIH Grants and Funding Opportunities
- CDC Search for Funding
- Health and Human Service Grants and Funding
- Fundsnet Services Online
- Health Resources and Service Administration
- National Science Foundation (NSF) Fastlane
- National Network of Libraries of Medicine
Proposal Preparation, Editing and Review The Department of Research and Grants Administration is available to assist investigators in the preparation of extramural funding requests. The Department can help investigators obtain information and data on the Hospital, our programs and the populations we serve as well as the communities where we are located. The Department also maintains current copies of the assurances, certificates and other documents that may be required for a grant application. During this process, the Department of Research and Grants Administration also provides editorial feedback with concentration toward the adequacy of literature review and other proposal criteria, including compliance with all application guidelines and requirements.
The following information is available for use in grant applications:

For more general guidance about writing proposals, the following websites may be of interest:
After a grant proposal is written, we work with the investigators and program directors to assure that the submission of proposals is in accordance with applicable deadlines. We also work with investigators to facilitate the institutional sign-off process prior to the submission of their application. Some funders require electronic submission, which may require additional steps.
Many government agencies, private foundations and corporate funders have moved to electronic application processes. The federal government has established a clearinghouse site, http://www.grants.gov/ to promote grant opportunities and streamline the application process. All Children’s is registered with the major federal agencies using electronic applications and is ready to submit applications in this format.
Workshops and Training Training is available for staff who would like to use resources such as the Foundation Center Database and grants.gov. Workshops covering a variety of topics related to the preparation of research and program funding proposals are offered periodically.
