|“Be a Lifesaver” - New Video Campaign to Help Pool Owners Keep Kids Safe|
Florida leads the nation in drowning deaths among children under 5 years of age. During the past 10 years, an average of 74 children have drowned each year. This means that 700 children did not live to celebrate their 5th birthday. Approximately 76% of these children drowned in residential pools.
Because of these staggering statistics, All Children's Hospital's Suncoast Safe Kids Coalition's FloridaSafePools Campaign has produced a new safety awareness video called "Be a Lifesaver." Funded by the Florida Department of Health, the video focuses on residential pool safety and provides parents and pool owners with safety tips designed to kids safe around the pool and prevent drownings.
Another way to keep kids safe around the pool is to make sure they can swim. Parents are encouraged to enroll their children in swimming lessons taught by a Certified Swim Instructor. Most community recreation departments offer free or very inexpensive lessons.
