Blood & Marrow Transplant (BMT) |
The Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant
(BMT) Program
The BMT Program at All Children’s Hospital is the
largest in Florida, and the only pediatric affiliate of Tampa’s H. Lee Moffitt
Cancer Center & Research Institute. Our program was one of the first pediatric centers
in the United States to offer “reduced intensity” transplants in an effort to
minimize the toxic effects of radiation and chemotherapy. We have
developed or are participating in a number of national protocols that utilize
hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), also known as bone marrow transplantation
, giving our patients access to national and international
protocols through our membership in the National Marrow Donor Program, the
Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium, the Children’s Oncology Group
and the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research. Our
program provides the full range of blood and marrow transplant services,
including marrow transplants, peripheral blood stem cell transplants and cord
blood transplants.
Affiliation with H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center All Children’s is the only
pediatric affiliate of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research
Institute, a National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Center
that U.S. News & World Report
ranked among the ten best cancer
centers in the nation. This formal collaboration lets us provide new and
innovative therapies for our patients. Physicians and researchers at All
Children’s and Moffitt are working together on trials of new medications and
therapies, and on research that takes new knowledge about the molecular biology
and biochemistry of cancer cells, and their response to potential therapies,
from the lab bench to the bedside as soon as possible. One example of this is
our new post-transplant tumor vaccine trial.
Program History
Our program was founded in 1985 by
Robert Good, M.D., Ph.D. A pioneer in the fields of transplantation and
immunology, Dr. Good performed the first successful bone marrow transplant in
1967 at the University of Minnesota. Since that first procedure, more than
100,000 blood and marrow transplants have been performed worldwide, and
promising new methods of stem cell transplantation are being developed in
collaboration with our partners at Moffitt.
Pediatric hematologist-oncologist Michael Nieder, M.D.,
is now the Director of Blood and Marrow Transplantation at All
Children’s. Learn more about our team...
