The Division of Pediatric Surgery offers a two year clinical fellowship in pediatric surgery.  This program is designed to provide fully trained general surgeons the opportunity to acquire additional expertise in pediatric surgery.  Under faculty supervision and mentorship the fellow will lead the pediatric surgical team in its care of patients in the both the inpatient and outpatient settings.  The operative experience at this tertiary care pediatric hospital provides a broad exposure to both routine general and thoracic pediatric surgery as well as more the specialized cases involving oncology and congenital anomalies. The program has a strong emphasis on minimally invasive surgery.   Selected rotations in neonatology, critical care medicine, urology and gastroenterology will augment the training opportunities offered on the pediatric surgical service.  This fellowship is not accredited by the ACGME and therefore graduates are not eligible for certification in pediatric surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Length: 2 years; start date of July 1.

Stipend: Training stipend and benefits provided.

Surgery Resident Research Fellowship

The surgery resident research fellowship is designed for general surgery residents who seek a career in pediatric surgery / academic surgery who plan to take a one or two year hiatus during clinical general surgery training for a focused experience in research.   The resident will be paired with a pediatric surgery faculty member mentor who will serve as the mentor for a main project.  The research resident will also be able to collaborate on other quality, outcomes, or clinical trial research being conducted by the Division.  Although not a clinical fellowship, the resident will cover night call every fourth night which will provide a limited clinical and operative experience in pediatric surgery.

Length: 2 years; start date of July 1.

Stipend: Training stipend and benefits provided.

Requirements: US candidates must be in good standing in an accredited US general surgery training program and be eligible for a State of Florida Medical Training License.

The student will be supervised and will report to the fellow and/or attending surgeon during this process. The student physician will attend and assist in the surgical care of patients in the operating room and be familiar with the general indications and techniques of the surgical procedures being performed. The student will assist in the formulation of the postoperative plan of care, perform daily rounds and ward care as needed and assist in discharge planning.
