Patricia O'Donnell, MS, RN-BC
Director, Clinical Education and Research

The Department of Clinical Education and Research collaborates with the Department of Employee Education to ensure a competent, well prepared staff to care for our patients. The Education Specialist in Clinical Education provides professional education and clinical in-services for all employees in the Division of Patient Care Services, and others. We are a Florida Board of Nursing Provider for continuing education, and report regularly to CEBroker. Many learning activities are deployed or scheduled on the Learning Management System, CHEX. All learning events are tracked on CHEX, so staff always has a current transcript available.

We offer monthly orientation programs for Patient Care Services, Nursing, Patient Care Assistants and Unit Secretaries. We develop and coordinate all Cerner (electronic medical record) classes, as well as education for the m any other electronic and technological systems and products used at ACH. All Children’s Hospital offers a 22-week Pediatric RN Residency program which is an innovative program designed for nurses by nurses. This program is offered twice annually. We coordinate the “Learn and Earn Pediatric Program” to encourage students of nursing and respiratory therapy to enter the pediatric specialty at our facility by providing employment and money that can be used for tuition, books and/or fees. Hundreds of students rotate through ACH annually, most coordinated by Clinical Education and Research. Additionally, we provide on site clinical nursing faculty for the University of South Florida. We also host a fully functional pediatric simulation lab and computer training room.
