What is Non-Pharmacological Pain Management?

The use of physical and psychological approaches to prevent, reduce, manage or stop pain sensations, in order to keep children as free of pain as possible without the use of medicine.

Program Overview

The Occupational and/or Physical Therapist uses a variety of non-invasive therapeutic techniques individually designed to meet the needs of the child. These therapeutic techniques may include electrical stimulation, therapeutic exercise, relaxation techniques (biofeedback, guided imagery, healing touch, aromatherapy), heat/cold applications, massage and other hands-on treatment. In addition, the therapist works with the child and family to develop a home program to manage the child's pain.

Therapy Goals

  • Decrease pain
  • Improve functional mobility
  • Improve activity level during school, sports, and leisure activities
  • Improve independence with age-appropriate activities of daily living (ADL)
  • Return to prior level of function
  • Improve sleep patterns
  • Improve posture
  • Improve self esteem

Who Would Benefit From This Program?

  • Children with acute or chronic pain
  • Children with a diagnosis of abdominal pain, headaches, post-surgical pain, complex regional pain syndrome, rheumatoid diseases, musculoskeletal pain and pain related to cancer or sickle cell anemia.

How Do I Get Started?

Discuss your concerns with your pediatrician and obtain a prescription for "Physical or Occupational Therapy Evaluation and Treatment".
