CAR SEAT SAFETY CONCERNS ADDRESSED AT THANKSGIVING TRAVEL TUNE-UP

(Nov 17, 2006) St. Petersburg, FL –  Families planning to hit the road this Thanksgiving can ensure one less worry before they go. All Children's Hospital and its Suncoast Safe Kids Coalition in conjunction with St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue will conduct free child passenger safety seat checks on Tuesday, November 21st as part of a Thanksgiving Travel Tune-Up event.

“We've received numerous calls from concerned parents over the past week as a result of viewing a heart-wrenching YouTube.com video,” explains Jean Shoemaker, Safe Kids program coordinator at All Children's Hospital. “It was posted by a Texas mother who lost her child despite the use of a child booster seat. Though we have no idea of the specifics of how this tragedy happened, we do have the expertise to educate the public on proper seat selection, installation and usage. That's what we want to share in the special pre-Thanksgiving event.”

Shoemaker and All Children's Safe Kids Coalition regularly train individuals to become NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians and Instructors. Many of these trained technicians will be on hand at Tuesday's event to check safety seats and educate families on their proper installation and use. A limited number of replacement seats will also be available through a Pinellas Health Department program for those instances where a family's safety seat does not provide proper protection for the child they've brought to the event.

The Travel Tune-Up will run from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM in an All Children's parking lot located at 800 Fourth Street South. Interested parents are encouraged to schedule an appointment for their free check-up by calling (727) 767-4188.

DIRECTIONS FROM I-275: Take the I-175 exit toward Tropicana Field and proceed through a traffic light at Fourth Street South. Turn right at the next street, Third Street South and proceed to Eight Avenue South. Turn right, and you will see the Tune-Up event in All Children's parking lot on the left.
