Two New Physician Leaders

The year ahead will bring new collaboration between the medical staff and hospital leadership at All Children’s. Effective January 2013, the incoming Chair of Pediatric Medicine and the Chair of Pediatric Surgery will report to the Vice Dean/Physician-in-Chief and will simultaneously have leadership roles with the hospital and the medical staff.

“This is an important milestone in our journey to become a leading pediatric academic medical center,” said Jonathan Ellen, M.D., President and Physician-in-Chief. “An essential part of our pathway to excellence is giving physicians a greater voice as we build a culture of collaboration and transparency.

“Our goal is to increase physician involvement in the leadership of ACH and to enhance alignment and synergy between the hospital and medical staff as we expand the tripartite mission of clinical care, education and research.”

Anthony Napolitano, M.D. will serve as the Chair of Pediatric Medicine and Paul Colombani, M.D. will serve as the Chair of Pediatric Surgery. These outstanding physician leaders were selected by a search committee that included representation from the medical staff, All Children’s Specialty Physicians, the hospital, and JHU faculty.

Dr. Napolitano and Dr. Colombani will serve on the new Leadership Councils recently established at ACH as well as on additional committees to support greater integration of the physician community with the academic team and hospital management team.

They will be responsible for the professional and medical staff administrative activities of their respective department, and will work closely with the Office of Medical Education and hospital administration to enhance teaching and research programs at ACH.

“I am thrilled with the appointment of our two chairs and look forward to their leadership in the growth of clinical programs, research and education and the full integration of these three arms of our mission as we move forward on our journey to realize the envisioned future of All Children’s Hospital,” notes Dr. Ellen.
